Susan Goldman Printmaker

"Until recently my monotypes have included figures and objects in imagined landscapes and still-lives, filled with iconography from the ancient past. I borrow images from historical sources and arrange them into a context that's both rhythmic and surreal. This is how the figure of a woman can be revealed in the shape of an ancient vase, and how layers of colors and images can suggest the continuum of the human experience."

Susan Goldman is a printmaker and teacher who explores ancient objects in her art. Her work has been praised for its "haunting beauty."

Susan Goldman is recognized for use of a monotype technique: the multi-drop process. She builds the surface of the composition by printing layer after layer of transparent inks onto a single sheet of paper. Then she selectively wipes the printing plate to create soft luminous effects and also uses solvents to break down and build up forms. In this way, background and foreground meld together; the play of light and dark creates a luminescent glow.

You can find Susan Goldman's work in many private and public
collections including the Library of Congress, the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington, DC.

She is a professor on the printmaking faculty and master printer for Navigation Press at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She owns and operates her own print atelier Lily Press in Rockville, Maryland.

Susan Goldman is available to present workshops for monotype, intaglio, woodcut and screen printing nationally and internationally. She demonstrates the monotype process in an eight-minute video made and distributed by the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.
